Identification of CD166+, CD44+, and EpCAM+cells in cancer cell lines (A549 and H2170) and the normal bronchial/tracheal epithelial cell line (PHBEC) by flow cytometry analysis. A subpopulation of CD166+ cells was identified in the PHBEC (38.7%), A549 (72.9%), and H2170 (52.6%) cell lines. A subpopulation of CD44+ cells was identified in the PHBEC (2.2%) and A549 (61.5%) cell lines, but CD44+ cells were totally absent in the H2170 cell line. In the PHBEC, A549, and H2170 cell lines, 4.9%, 13.8%, and 33.8%, respectively, were EpCAM+.
