MIF promotes the migration and invasion of breast cancer cells. Invasive MDA-MB-231 cells were incubated in the upper Matrigel-coated insert of a Transwell chamber and their migration and invasion measured in response to rMIF added as a chemoattractant to the lower chamber at indicated concentrations. Invaded Calcein-labelled cells were counted by fluorescence microscopy. (a) Quantification of 5 independent experiments taking 10 pictures each. Data points are means ± SD and asterisks indicate significant increases of the invasion rate (*, p < 0.05; **, p < 0.01).
