Table 1 Summarised SIGN 2003 guidelines defining medium and high risk families

High Risk

A least three family members affected by CRC, or at least two affected by CRC and one affected by endometrial cancer. One relative must be aged ≤50 years and one must be a first degree relative.

Medium Risk

One first degree relative with CRC ≤45 years

Gene carriers (HNPCC)

Two first degree relatives affected (one aged < 55 years)

Untested first degree relatives of gene carriers

At least two relatives with CRC or endometrial cancer who are first degree relatives of each other
