Proposed model for programmed expression of pro-apoptotic BMCC1 during apoptosis, triggered by DNA damage in NB cells. ATM- and E2F1-dependent transcriptional induction of BMCC1 was identified in NB cells exhibiting early steps of apoptosis caused by DNA damage with short time treatment of CDDP. Subsequently, full-length BMCC1 was proteolytically cleaved by caspase-9, which was activated in the advanced steps of apoptosis, in NB cells. Our previous study demonstrated that BMCC1 promotes apoptosis through cleavage-dependent activation of caspase-9 in human cells
