Schematic representation of ERα classically regulating ERRβ and role of ERRβ in cell cycle regulation through p18 and p21cip. In the presence of estrogen ERα gets activated and forms a heterodimer by interacting with ERRβ. ERα alone or along with ERRβ in the form of heterodimer binds to the promoter region of ERRβ and up-regulates its promoter activity. ERRβ up-regulates cell cycle markers expression such as p21cip and p18. p21cip, p18 are cyclin dependent kinase inhibitors and halt cell cycle.
