Identification of SP cells in the three HNSCC cell lines. HNSCC cells were stained with Hoechst 33342 dye and sorted using flow cytometry. The presence of the SP, which was gated and shown as a percentage of the entire viable cell population for each cell line, was confirmed in the SCC4 (a), SAS (b), and HSC4 cells (c). In each cell line, the SP was obviously abolished in the presence of reserpine, indicating that each population was truly an SP (d–f)
