17β-estradiol-induced cell proliferation in ER-α positive breast cancer requires the activation of the transcription factor SREBP-1C which induces SCD-1 expression and a change in the cellular monounsaturated to saturated fatty acid ratio (MUFA/SFA). This induction is partially driven through the IGF-1 receptor (IGFR) and the strength of the stimulation is depicted by the thickness of the arrows. SCD-1 was previously shown to be required for the modulation of cell signalling related to cell proliferation [20]. Since SCD-1 activity is responsible for changes in cellular MUFA/SFA ratios, it is hypothesized that SCD-1 impacts on cell signalling pathways by a putative cellular sensing mechanism for MUFA/SFA ratios
