Figure 3From: Excess visceral adiposity induces alterations in mitochondrial function and energy metabolism in esophageal adenocarcinoma ACM alters mitochondrial energy metabolism. (A) Intracellular levels of ATP were significantly reduced in OE33 cells treated with ACM from both non-obese (n = 2) and obese (n = 4) EAC patients, when compared to controls. (B) Basal OCR was significantly reduced in OE33 cells treated with ACM from non-obese EAC patients, when compared to controls. (C) Basal ECAR was significantly reduced in OE33 cells incubated with ACM from non-obese EAC patients, whilst ECAR was significantly increased in OE33 cells treated with ACM from obese patients, when compared to controls. (D) Treatment with 2-deoxyglucose (55 mM), significantly reduced ECAR levels in OE33 cells treated with ACM from obese EAC patients, when compared to controls. Data are presented as the mean ± SEM. Analysis was performed by two-tailed Student’s t-test, **p < 0.01, *p < 0.05.Back to article page
